When I got my Macbook Air, I knew that only having 256GBs of storage space would be difficult to manage at times. However the pros of solid state storage and lightweight portability outweighed the requirements for lots of storage.

I became much more tidy with my files, only keeping what I really need on my MacBook. If I want to play a game I uninstall it when I was finished, my YouTube videos are quickly moved to external storage and I don't store any music on my Macbook.

However there were times that I really wished I had a bit more space, I was seeing 1GB free more often that i'd like and I was looking around for a solution.

About a year ago I was reading a lot about a website called Kickstarter. At the time I didn't really pay much attention to it, until a few months ago, when I discovered how good it was. In short Kickstarter is a website that allows projects to be funded by individuals, It could be any creative ideas, games, films, products, books etc. Each project will set a goal for the amount of funding they require and how many days they have to raise that amount, if either of those are not met the project will not be funded.

Once the idea has been pitched users can back a project and donate to help get off the ground. There are often different levels of backers, for example if the project is a game, £20 will get you early access to the game, but £40 will get you early access plus an exclusive collectors edition.

It was through Kickstarter that I found the solution to my storage problems. The Nifty MiniDrive allows anyone to quickly and easily add more storage to there MacBook computer.

Any website owner or blogger probably looks at their website stats fairly regularly. If only for the random Google searches that direct them to you.

I have about 4 or 5 different apps for my website stats, each one presents it in a different way. So are very in depth with lots of information, others are very graphical which only show you what you really want to know.

One of the best looking apps is Analytiks for the iPhone. It displays your stats in a very nice way, and allows you to produce a full size infographic.

For Christmas i decided to buy myself a new iMac, it's funny when you get to the age when you start buying yourself presents.

Anyway i digress, I knew that it featured USB 3 ports, and this the first time i had used them on a device. USB 3 has been designed to be backwards compatible, so in theory will work with all USB 2 devices. The connector on the computer remains the same size (it features additional USB connectivity internally), but the connector for the device will be different.

Image

As you can see from the diagram above, the USB 3 connectors have a larger connector to support the new USB 3 hardware. New USB 3 hubs, hard drives and other devices will feature this connector.

Back to the point of this blog, my Logitech MX Anywhere Mouse features a tiny USB wireless receiver, which will plug into any USB slot. The introduction of USB 3 should not affect this device as the connectors on the computer remain the same.

Unfortunately this is not the case. I have been experiencing erratic mouse behaviour for the last few days, it would freeze or randomly jump across the screen, very frustrating.....

20 years ago, having the most unto date technology was a choice rather than a must have, it was less common for everyone to have it. These days however chart has completely changed, everybody is affected by new technology in some way or another, and if they're not they are certainly tempted.

The prefect example is the Amazon Kindle. Almost everyone knows what it is and what it does, it allows you to store and read thousands of books on a single device. No more massive bookcases or having to get rid of old books to make room for more, now you can keep them all forever.

It's interesting to see how this is affecting the different generations. For example people in my generation, friends and family, we grew up reading normal paperback books, but then the Kindle arrived and we had to have it, because it was cool and easier to read lots of books. Lots of my friends got one straight away and loved it, it's a very good product after all so why wouldn't they?....

It's time for the battle of the messengers! I'm lucky enough to own a BlackBerry and an iPhone, don't worry the fact I'm a huge Apple fan wont make this blog biased, honest tongue.gif.

I've said this many times before, the main reason i have a Blackberry is for Blackberry Messenger, my friends all went through the phase of getting one, its a free to message as much as you want, so it became massively popular. However the Blackberry is not good for pretty much everything else, so i use my iPhone for everything apart from messaging.

iOS5 was released last week and included iMessage, which is the same as BBM but between iOS devices, the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. I've been using it for a few days now and its flawless.....

Computer technology is improving all the time, faster CPUs, more RAM, better graphics etc. For years that was all well and good. However there was always one part of a computer that slowed it down, the hard drive. Apart from the fans in the computer it's the only moving part and that's the reason it is a massive bottleneck. The drive has to spin up and down all the time to read and write data, this would cause lag and poor performance.

A few years ago though Solid State Drives (SSDs) were introduced, as you might have guessed their solid with no moving parts. So the lag caused by spinning up and down is gone and it allows them to read and write data at much faster speeds, which in turn gives a massive performance boost.

SSDs are still a very new technology and as with all technology have pros as well as cons.....

I feel like i need to give all you computer users out there some advice!

Everyone should take a regular backup of your important files. Whether it's your documents, holiday photos, blog, website, music, if it's important to you you should also keep another copy.

Backups have once again saved me from a mistake. Whilst deleting some spam comments on my website i accidentally deleted the entire database of blog comments. 500 comments were gone with the click of a mouse. Opps!

I panicked for a second, but then realised i had a backup and everything would be ok. 2 minutes later everything was restored and it was as if nothing had happened!

However if i didn't have a backup all that information would be gone forever! It would of been extremely frustrating if i had lost all that information. ....

Posted From My iPad
The other day I was talking to someone whose laptop had failed due to a dead hard drive and they wanted to get the data off of it. It happens to everyone eventually and it proves why backing up your data is so important.

If you don't have a backup then in the event of a series hard drive failure recovering data is unlikely. But not impossible.

You could send it off to a data recovery specialist but that's very costly and individuals would take that option. So we did some research and a most unbelievable option was suggested.

Freezing the hard drive. Yup you heard that right, putting the hard drive in a freezer.

Now I've been a computer geek for years and seen a fair few hard drives fail but never ever heard of this before. ....

All i seem to hear at the moment is "would you ever change from your iPhone to Android?

A few months ago it would of be a straight "no" but now I'm not so sure.

Don't get me wrong, i love my iPhone, it's the best phone i have ever had. It does everything I'd want it todo and more, i use it all day everyday and i couldn't ever go back to a normal smartphone.

But it's not perfect. ....
