Picture perfect
Wow it's been a while since I blogged! I almost feel ashamed to call myself a blogger. I was away on training last week and the week before I was here there and everywhere!
A few weeks ago my camera broke, the lens wouldn't close and I couldn't get it to focus, so I had to get a new camera. Many people class me as a "geek" because I know a lot about technology. Sure I can build a PC in 20 minutes, I can fix 99% of problems I come across and i'm addicted to tech in general. But wait for it, I really don't know much about cameras.
The range of camera's is quite simply massive, from Compact, bridge to full blown SLR cameras, oh and don't forget mirror-less! Where do I start? I want good quality photos and HD videos, thats pretty much it. I would love and SLR, but I don't want the hassle of carrying around multiple lenses and knowing which one is the right one to use. My friend is an "amateur" photographer and his bag weights about 15KGs. I get annoyed carrying around my 5KG 17inch Alienware laptop (see not just a Mac boy), it is the reason I have a Macbook Air though.
I spent a lot of time going to try out different cameras and seeing what was available, I got a load of advice, but at the end of the day i'm a compact camera kinda guy at the end of the day. But that doesn't mean it still can't be good.
I settled on the Canon Powershot S100, the almost top of the line compact camera available at the moment. Canon also produce the GX1, which still classes as a compact camera, but I couldn't justify the cost.

Features
I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I really like it, it takes good quality photos, its compact, but feels extremely well built, I don't like products that feels like it's going to break any minute. The only thing i'm not keen on is the popup flash, my finger always seems to get in the way. I'm not sure if thats because I'm left handed.
I decided to get an Eye-Fi card for it as well. Eye-Fi cards are a wireless SDHC memory card, it creates its own wireless network and you can connect it to a wireless access point to send photos/videos straight to the internet or your computer, no cable required. It gets better though, you can also send your photos/videos direct to your iPhone, perfect for quickly sending a photo to Instagram. It also gives you unto 64GB of storage right in your pocket.
Eye-Fi cards are available in 4 or 8 GB sizes and either class 4 or class 6 speed. However not all versions support sending to your iPhone. The Eye-Fi Pro X2 also supports the RAW photo format.
However I do still want an SLR, it will happen sometime I'm sure.
